Welcome !
TERRY ANDERSON (1940 - 2018)

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Terry Anderson on the morning of Monday 19th March. Terry had suffered a severe stroke on Tuesday 13th March and was being kept in an induced coma in Hospital. On Sunday he was taken out of the coma and seemed stable but he died of a heart attack at 4 o'clock the following morning.

Terry had been actively involved in cycling since the age of 16 and had raced every year until 2017 when he took on the role of full-time carer for his wife Hazel. Not only was he involved in racing, Terry took on many administrative roles at club, district and national level and only recently became Treasurer for the ECCA and Events Secretary for CTT London East - his death is a huge loss to cycling, the ECCA and this Club in particular.

The funeral took place at Chelmsford Crematorium, Writtle, on Thursday 5th April with the cortege being preceded by a cycle honour ride with members of Shaftesbury and Essex Roads. The ceremony was attended by over 200 mourners and afterwards everyone was able to gather at Hylands House, Hylands Park, Chelmsford, to share their memories of a remarkable man and to partake in the wonderful refreshments provided by the family.

The family have asked that any donations in his memory should be be made to the British Heart Foundation or Essex Air Ambulance.

2018 Evening 10's

2018 Evening 10's Series, Wednesdays 4th April to August 22nd.
This year's series gets under way on Wednesday 4th April with a start time of 6.45 pm (they get later as the season progresses) on the E.81a course. From then until August 22nd competition will be intense for the six Trophies involved - Senior Men, Juniors and Senior Ladies on Handicap Times plus Mens and Ladies on Fastest Times and Veterans on Standard. Keep in touch with each week's result via the website; full results will be given throughout the season, along with the Handicap Times and Fastest Times tables. Click on Time Trials on the Main Menu and then Evening 10's on the Time Trial menu or click here to go straight to the results.

Although we are keeping to the 20 events for the series there are a few changes for 2018.
(1) - All 20 events will be on the E.81a course.
(2) - Also, note that there will be no Evening 10 on the 13th June, on that day we will be running a 25 miles time trial on the Vipers circuit.
(3) - Lastly, remember that payment for the race will have to be made on the day. Please have the correct cash with you. Cost for Seniors is £3 and there is no charge for under 19's. For PTT's the cost is £4.

You can enter on the night or reserve your place in advance, but only 3 weeks in advance, by entering online or at the Clubroom. Privates are welcome if there is space available, cost is just £4.00 but for that you will be able to take part in an event which is run like an open - marshals all round the course, lots of riders and a full published result sheet. Why not enter on-line? - note that on-line or email entry is not available on the day, for that you must turn up at the Clubroom.

Click here for full details of times and courses and the entry form.

Normally you can enter in advance but for the first 3 events, which have limited fields, this is unlikely as places are going fast and preference obviously goes to Club riders. If you haven't already entered then give the on-the-day organiser a ring otherwise all you can do is turn up on the night and see if there are any non-shows. Disappointing for some but it is something which such a large Club as ours will experience from time to time. (If the weather is bad then the likelihood of non-shows is higher.)

It is very important that all members who have booked a number let the on-the-day organiser know in advance (at the Clubroom or by text) if they are unable to ride on any particular evening. This will ensure that other members can get a ride. Also, if you fail to inform of your non-riding on two (2) occasions you may forfeit your number.

Club members are reminded that they are obliged to marshal a number of the Evening 10's throughout the season (exact number is in proportion to number of events ridden last year) or find a replacement if they are unable to be there - and to let the on-the-day organiser know the name of the replacement.

Track Training
Kate Tucker-Vincent 1943-2017

As already announced in the recent Newsletter Kate died on 18th February due to suffering complications after her fall and broken hip. Her funeral will take place at 2 pm on 23rd March at the Herongate Wood Cemetery which is located on the road between Little Burstead and Herongate. Barry has asked that there should only be family flowers but if you would like to make a donation in memory of Kate then this can be done at the service or you can donate directly to Mental Health Research UK via their website.

Club Annual General Meeting, Wednesday 25th September.
The 2019 AGM will be held at the Clubroom, Mountnessing Village Hall, starting at 7.30 pm. All members are urged to attend as there are major decisions to be made.

The Committee will be putting forward some interesting ideas which will affect all members and if you are at the AGM you will be able to put your views forward.

Any propositions that you have for Rule Changes must be sent, in writing, to Club Secretary Laurence Bellamy by 11th September. The current rules are available for download from this link.

Various positions on the Committee will be vacant and there are also plenty of opportunities for other members to help with the running of the Club so now is the time to consider what you can do.

Lake Geneva Challenge for Parkinsons Disease

Representing Shaftesbury Cycling Club, Sam Thienel, Ian and Gary Jackson and Matt Steel will be completing 500 miles in 3 days, through the Vosges region of France, tracking the Rhine along the German French border to our final stop in Montreux on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

We are riding for Parkinson's UK. Sam's aunt was diagnosed with this debilitating disease at the age of just 34. Like many of the 10,000 people diagnosed each year, Julie has relied heavily on Parkinsons UK for care, support and advice throughout the 10 years that she has lived with the condition. Far from just relying on the charity, Julie has devoted a great deal of her own time to raising awareness and funds, particularly for the Havering branch of the charity, who ensure that local people living with Parkinson's receive the support they deserve.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition from which one in 500 people suffer. That's around 127,000 people in the UK. There currently is no cure, but drugs, treatment and care help to manage the symptoms.

You can still donate to the charity by following this link to the Virgin Money Giving page.
Many thanks for your anticipated support - Sam, Ian, Gary & Matt

In addition to asking for donations via Virgin Money Giving they organised a very successful quiz evening and raffle at the Village Hall on Wednesday 24th August after the Time Trial. Along with an entertaining and challenging quiz there was a huge array of goodies to be won in the raffle and an auction for some very desirable items. Lots of money was raised for their appeal and about 50 members and friends had an enjoyable evening. Hopefully we'll soon be able to put answers to all those questions as it hoped that the full answers will appear on this website.

Sunday Runs

Shaftesbury Sunday Social

On the first Sunday of every month, club members organise a social ride designed to be inclusive and relaxed, encouraging both members and non-members to experience the fun of an organised club ride without any pressure. The route is typically between 30-35 miles and we will include a cafe stop somewhere along the route, with an average speed typically around 15 or 16 mph, depending on the route and conditions.

For anyone that hasn't ridden in a group before, this is one of the best ways to try it out alongside friendly and experienced club riders, who will manage the pace and make sure everyone is kept safe and together as a group, from start to finish.

Non-members are most welcome and, whilst we always welcome membership enquiries, you'll be under no obligation to join so please feel free to give it a go and just enjoy the ride! The only 'rules' are that you'll need a road bike in good condition, mud guards, tools/puncture repair so you're self-sufficient, and of course to able to ride for a couple of hours at a steady pace.

The group will meet at Mountnessing Village Hall car park and will leave at 9.00 am so please try to be there at least 5 minutes early if possible, so that the ride co-ordinators can welcome you in plenty of time before we set off.

All welcome

There will be a raffle and any donations of suitable prizes will be most welcome.

Members' Section

Club members are reminded that there is a section of the website which is only available to those Club members who have registered. The contents include the up to date Club database and other material which is really private to Club members and shouldn't be available to the whole world wide web. To enter the section you will need to register and this can be done by clicking on Login in the left hand menubar.

Warning - Stolen Manhole Covers
A number of local riders have reported that manhole covers are being stolen for scrap metal, leaving open holes in the road. Clearly this causes a great hazard should a cyclist hit one of these holes. Please take care out there and should you see one missing then report it to the local Council in order that it can be replaced.

Alert - Stolen Bikes
Will all Club members please be aware of a recent spate of bikes being stolen in Essex from outside pubs/cafes whilst Club Run's are taking refreshment inside. Either padlock the bikes or keep them in sight, preferably both. Alternatively don't stop and just keep riding!
On Line Facilities

Entries for Club Events
You can enter Weekend events and Evening 10's via our On Line entry forms. Click here and then select event to enter.

Result Notification
All Shaftesbury riders are required to notify the Time Trial Secretary of their results in Open and Association events. This is so that winners of Season long competitions can be determined as well as Club records. It also makes it possible to give correct handicaps in Club events. Additionally, the information can be made available on this website so others can read of your successes. To give all visitors to the website the latest details of time trial and road race successes, please send in results for all your races (except Club events) with your time or placing, other Club members' results and the winners details.
Click here to send in details.
